About The English Premier League
The Premier League is officially the Barclays Premier League due to sponsorship reasons. Many fans call it the Premiership. It is the highest professional league (or division) in England that football clubs may compete. As it is at the pinacle of the English football league system, it is the England’s main football competition.

The Premier League is currently contested by 20 football clubs. A system of promotion and relegation with The Football League is operated with 3 teams coming up from The Championship (previously referred to as Division one) and the 3 lowest positioned teams going down from the Premier League at the end of each season. Each season runs from August to May, with all teams playing 38 games each.

Brief History of the English Premier League
The competition was originally formed as the FA Premier League on 20 February 1992 and the first games were played on 15 August that year. The main reason for this was the decision of clubs in the Football League First Division (now called the Championship) to break away from the traditional Football League in order to take advantage the lucrative television rights deals on offer. The Football League had been both England and Wales’ main football competition since 1888.

Since then, the English Premier League has become the most watched sporting league in the world. It is also the richest football league. Combined club revenues were estimated at around £1.4 billion in 2005–06. This figure is expected to rise to around £1.8 billion for 2007–08, mainly due to rising media revenues. Effectively the Premier League is a corporation with the 20 clubs acting as shareholders.

A total of 40 clubs have competed in the Premier League since it’s creation. Only four football teams have actually won the title; these are Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal, and Chelsea. The current Premier League champions are Manchester United, who won their tenth title in the 2008–09 season, the most of any Premier League team.
